〜にわたって・〜をめぐって

Two formal grammar patterns common in news and reports: 〜にわたって (over a span) and 〜をめぐって (concerning / over a dispute).

〜にわたって

Used with time or space to show the whole extent.

3日間にわたって会議が行われた。 — The meeting was held over three days.

〜をめぐって

Used when there is debate or conflict about something.

新しい法律をめぐって、議論が続いている。 — Debate continues over the new law.

Common mistakes

Don't use をめぐって for simple "about" — use について there.
